what is ultimate frisbee?

Do you enjoy team sports? Do you want to meet a group of fun loving students? Are you tired of the same sports? Do you want to look good on the beach? Do you want to help us achieve our goals? If you’ve answered yes to any of the above or are simply curious, come play Ultimate Frisbee with the Pies…

Come Play With Us...

Playing Ultimate Frisbee at the University of Newcastle with Too Many Pies is difficult to describe… All players who have come to love playing here have their own reasons. For some it’s getting to meet new friends; for others it keeps them fit and healthy; while for a lucky few, it’s been a good place to meet the new love in their lives… just ask a few of our current players. The one constant between all who play Frisbee here – is a love for our game.

Last year saw the beginning of a new era – it was the last year for many of the old Pies who graduated in the Summer of 2007 – we will miss them. Fortunately, a new wave of players joined the team and we are excited as to where and what we can achieve in this next era of the Pies.

Last season the Open team narrowly missed out on a place in the top 16 at University Nationals. The Pies eventually finished second in the 2nd division – the best result since the team was founded 5 years ago. The mixed team finished 4th at University Nationals, which was a tournament the Pies hosted (so we also had the depth in our club to field two further teams). In the women’s division, Pies placed 2nd in the Indoor Regional qualifier but low numbers (and exams) kept the women’s team from competing at the National level... this year ladies!

One of our most important philosophies at Newcastle, is to play hard but fair, and to this end the Pies won several spirit* prizes last year (2006-2007) – the most prestigious of prizes awarded to the team who played most fairly as judged by our competitors in tournaments.

Our Aims For This Year...

Our aims for this coming year are to build on the past, expand the club, improve our level of play and most importantly to have more fun ;)

We aim to:
break into the top 16 in the Open division
compete for victory in the Mixed and Women’s divisions too.

Our style of play will be Total Ultimate – the focus, a team of superstars contributing together on the same field.

In order to do this, we will be holding regular socials (usually themed nights – excuses must be good to miss these). We will have regular indoor and outdoor training sessions, some more intense than others, and to bolster and hone our skills we will also be running regular training sessions with Newcastle’s own Club Frisbee team, The Brown.

the rules of the game

The aim is to score points by catching the disc in the end-zone. You can't move with the disc - although you can choose which foot to pivot on after stopping - so must pass the disc from team mate to team mate to move up the pitch. Meanwhile, the opposition does their best to hinder this by blocking, marking, and counting the 10 seconds you may hold onto the disc for. All very simple.

*spirit of the game

Ultimate is unique in the fact that, at no level are referees used. The game is officiated by the players on the pitch, using an idea called Spirit of the Game. This SOTG, is a combination of playing with desire, but playing fairly and honestly, which works because every one else does the same (well 99.9% of the time). If there are contested decisions, the players involved discuss the call, and they reach a resolution. It may mean calling your own team mate out, or trusting an opponent on an event you didn't see. It really helps to promote a great sport, and makes Ultimate the sport we know and love! If you want to read more about spirit check this out.
